World Glaucoma Awareness Week
9th–15th March 2025
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma, “the sneak thief of sight”, is a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve (the cable that connects the eye to the brain) usually without noticeable symptoms in the beginning to alert the individual that there is a problem. It usually occurs when fluid builds up in the front part of the eye. The extra fluid increases the pressure in the eye, damaging the optic nerve.

Facts
- Vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored.
- Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world.
- Anyone, regardless of age, can develop glaucoma. It most commonly affects older adults.
- Glaucoma can take as much as 40% of vision without a person noticing any symptoms.
