Dr Maria is a Consultant Ophthalmologist who has fully trained in the UK with sub-specialty in Neuro-ophthalmology.
She has 10+ years of clinical experience in Ophthalmology working in various National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in England including Moorfields Eye Hospital and St George’s University Hospital (London), Sunderland Eye Infirmary and Royal Victoria Infirmary (Newcastle-Upon-Tyne).
Towards the end of 2023, she returned to Cyprus and has been working in her practice in Nicosia.

WORK EXPERIENCE
UK Foundation Programme
Following her graduation, she completed the 2-year UK Foundation Programme working as a doctor in various hospitals in London, including University College London Hospital (UCLH). During this period, she gained full registration to the General Medical Council (GMC, UK) with a license to practice.
Specialty training in Ophthalmology
Dr Vrahimi was successful in securing a place in the highly competitive 7-year UK Specialty Training Programme in Ophthalmology. She successfully completed her training in the Northern Deanery of England, specifically in the following teaching hospitals: Sunderland Eye Infirmary, Royal Victoria Infirmary (Newcastle-Upon-Tyne) and The James Cook University Hospital (Middlesbrough). She obtained the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) and has been on the GMC’s Specialist Register as an Ophthalmologist since.
During the Ophthalmic Specialty Training programme, she trained and gained clinical experience in General Ophthalmology, Emergency Eye Care and all the Ophthalmology sub-specialties, namely Medical Retina, Glaucoma, Cataract, Cornea, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Neuro-ophthalmology, Strabismus, Oculoplastics & Orbit and Uveitis.
Moreover, she trained in ophthalmic surgery with the main focus being on cataract surgery. As part of her training, Dr Vrahimi gained clinical experience in the use of laser for treating retinal conditions, posterior capsular opacification and glaucoma as well as in the use of intravitreal injections for managing macular conditions. Additionally, she trained in the use of Botulinum toxin (Botox) for symptomatic treatment of blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm.
Sub-specialty training
Following completion of ophthalmic specialty training, she completed a Clinical Fellowship in Neuro-ophthalmology in the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London for 18 months. During this period, she gained further clinical experience in various neuro-ophthalmic conditions which affect the optic nerve, eye movements and parts of the brain which are responsible for processing vision and co-ordinating eye movements.
Work as Consultant Ophthalmologist
After completing the Clinical Fellowship, Dr Vrahimi worked as locum Consultant Ophthalmologist in Neuro-ophthalmology in Moorfields Eye Hospital and as locum Consultant Ophthalmologist in Sunderland Eye Infirmary. During her Clinical Fellowship and Consultant posts, she supervised Ophthalmology trainees.

Other professional activities
Dr Vrahimi has presented work in Ophthalmology conferences and meetings in the UK and abroad. She has publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Moreover, she has been actively involved in teaching and training medical students, general practitioners and Ophthalmology trainees throughout her specialty training and work in the UK. She has organised educational workshops relating to Ophthalmology. Furthermore, she has participated in clinical audit and quality improvement projects.
